Winter Solstice Starts Today

The solstice is today December, 21! This day marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Since the Northern Hemisphere is angled the farthest away from the sun on this day. This happens every single year! Usually on December 21st (Today!) or also it can happen on December 22nd. Today also typically marks the first day of winter so that is pretty neat! Just as an interesting fact where you are will dictate how much sunlight you get! This is because the farther north of the equator you are the less sunlight you will receive and the more night time.

Celebrations On Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice in the past and sometimes still today was a key point of the year for celebrating. These holidays had many Pagan roots originally, however they eventually formed into what we know as Christmas. Because the Church wanted to stop all of the chaotic celebrating so they made their own holiday on the 25th near the Winter Solstice when many people partied and went crazy. By making their own day they were able to make more people celebrate their own religious day. To learn more about this look at this article I wrote on the origin of Christmas! Most of the traditions of Christmas came from these ancient Pagan celebrations during the winter time. The connection that Ancient Pagan traditions has with modern day Christmas is definitely astounding!
