This Day In History: Eggnog Riot

Here is a new thing, this day in history! Where I talk about big events that happened on a particular day in history. So without further ado I will get on with it! The Eggnog Riot happened on December 24th on 1826. It remains as a part of history widely unknown. This whole situation occurred at West Point. This riot became chaotic with over 80 participants! It definitely is something I did not know about. However after some research I saw how fascinating it was! Read below to learn how this situation came to be!

What Happened? The incident occurred at West Point, Back in that time drinking was done quite often there. Around the holidays it was a tradition apparently for the cadets to drink eggnog. However in 1826 Colonel Sylvanus Thayer banned the consumption of alcohol on West Point property. This went over about as well as one would expect it too. On Christmas eve a lot of the cadets smuggled in 3-4 gallons of whiskey. Around four in the morning an officer was awaken by the loud party…

Winter Solstice Starts Today

The solstice is today December, 21! This day marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Since the Northern Hemisphere is angled the farthest away from the sun on this day. This happens every single year! Usually on December 21st (Today!) or also it can happen on December 22nd. Today also typically marks the first day of winter so that is pretty neat! Just as an interesting fact where you are will dictate how much sunlight you get! This is because the farther north of the equator you are the less sunlight you will receive and the more night time.

Celebrations On Winter SolsticeWinter Solstice in the past and sometimes still today was a key point of the year for celebrating. These holidays had many Pagan roots originally, however they eventually formed into what we know as Christmas. Because the Church wanted to stop all of the chaotic celebrating so they made their own holiday on the 25th near the Winter Solstice when many people partied and went crazy. By making their o…

Ramble About: The Fruitcake

If you are like me you have heard about fruitcake but have never dared to try it. I don't know what holds me back from trying it... Perhaps it's the common talk about it. Every year I hear about how Disgusting fruitcake is. But I don't think that I known anyone who knows what it tastes like. Let alone anyone who knows where it comes from or the history of it. So I figured my big task for this article is to find out what fruitcake is. Where it comes from and maybe how you can make it if you are interested! Perhaps I should also make a commitment this year to finally trying the fruitcake...

Fruitcake What Is It?Basically it is a cake that contains dried fruit or nuts. It usually also contains different spices like Cinnamon or Nutmeg. Originally it was known as something that was soaked in spirits. It is also known for having quite a long shelf life. Due to most of the preservatives in there it can last many many years and still taste the same! However fruitcake is also notori…

Expedition 57 Landing: Watch December 20th/19th

On December 20th there will be a landing! The current astronauts at the International Space Station will be concluding their mission. Here is a brief quote from NASA's website " Astronauts Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA, Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency (ESA), and cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, will undock their Soyuz spacecraft from the International Space Station and land in Kazakhstan." Below you can learn a little bit more about the length of the mission. You can also learn where to watch the landing! I feel like not enough people anymore are excited by things such as this. But just imagine these are people who have been in space for half a year roughly. Now they through technology and rockets will land back at home. I think it's important to just sit back and look at the sophistication going on here. It is definitely something we should appreciate and admire. If you have some free time you should definitely give it…

A cool artist: Emily Carr

So today I want to talk about a cool artist, Emily Carr. She was a Canadian artist who's known for combining a Modernist and Post-Impressionist painting style. Emily Carr painted many forest scenes near the end of her life. In her journal, she wrote “What do these forests make you feel? Their weight and density, their crowded orderliness. There is scarcely room for another tree and yet there is space around each. They are profoundly solemn yet uplifting joyous. You can find everything in them that you look for, showing how absolutely full of truth, how full of reality the juice and essence of life are in them. They teem with life, growth, expansion…” She had a very interesting outlook on what forests could mean. I am a big fan of this quote from her. Unfortunately, it wasn't until later in her life when she became popular. She is now recognized as a great Canadian painter.
